There is a particular kind of courage in saying out loud what you have only ever whispered to yourself. sombr, the born-and-bred New Yorker who at just 20 years old has already amassed billions of global streams and sold out headline shows across multiple continents, has never been the type to look away from the uncomfortable thing. With “My Body Isn’t Ready,” released June 25 via Warner Records and his own imprint SMB, he goes further than anything he has put on record before, and the result is one of the most quietly devastating songs of the year. Written and produced by sombr alongside regular collaborator Tony Berg, the track deals with body image issues and their subsequent impact on relationships. It is described in press materials as an “anthemic ballad,” but what strikes you on first listen is how unguarded it feels, how free of armor. This is not a song built for radio distance. It is built for the 2 a.m. version of yourself that has no interest in pretending. YouTube
On Instagram, sombr shared his intention plainly: “I hope this song can mean different things to different people. It can be taken as a metaphor. Or it can be taken literally as a description of how I have perceived my own body, for my whole life. I wanted to write about my struggle so that other people who may also be struggling know that they are not alone. You are beautiful, and I love you.” YouTube
The Video That Makes It Even More Personal
The official music video, directed by frequent collaborator Gus Black, was released the same day as the single and features sombr alongside American actress Inde Navarrette and actor Josh Heuston. YouTube
sombr is shown arriving at an art show hosted by Heuston’s character, where he is mocked by Heuston and the other attendees and told he does not belong there. sombr briefly interacts with Navarrette’s character before entering one of the rooms alone and looking at his reflection in the mirror. He then covers himself with a protective shell of newspaper, leaving only his face exposed. It is a striking visual choice, that shell of paper, fragile and improvised, suggesting the ways people assemble whatever protection they can find when the world makes them feel small. YouTube
From there the story turns. The two of them spend the remainder of the night together exploring, and are about to kiss before being interrupted by fireworks, which they watch together. Scenes of sombr performing the song close to the camera, first in a sheer shirt and then shirtless, are interspersed throughout. The decision to perform shirtless within a video explicitly about body insecurity is the kind of choice that lands differently once you understand the context behind it. It reads as an act of reclamation more than bravado. YouTube
Building Toward Something Bigger
“My Body Isn’t Ready” follows “Homewrecker” and “Potential,” two singles that established the sonic and emotional territory of his forthcoming second studio album. “Homewrecker” was named one of Rolling Stone’s best songs of 2026 so far, with the publication praising sombr’s all-in vocal and the track’s bass line laid down by former Prince muse Wendy Melvoin. The new single carries that same intimacy but strips the arrangement back even further, letting the lyric do more of the work. BillboardApple Music
To mark the release, sombr made his debut as both musical and interview guest on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing “My Body Isn’t Ready.” His appearance follows a string of standout moments including a performance at the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City and a powerful live performance of “Homewrecker” at this year’s American Music Awards. He also announced a surprise intimate show in New York City the following evening, the kind of gesture that has become something of a signature for him. The last time the musician hosted a free show in his hometown, he shut down part of Canal Street to celebrate the arrival of his debut album, I Barely Know Her. That instinct to bring the music back to street level, even as the venues grow larger, says something meaningful about where his priorities lie. Apple Music
The Road Ahead
Starting next month, sombr will launch his North American You Are The Reason Arena Tour, beginning July 22 in Mexico City and culminating with two nights at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. For an artist still in the early chapters of what is shaping up to be a defining career, a two night stand at the Garden feels less like a arrival and more like a checkpoint. Rate Your Music
“My Body Isn’t Ready” is the kind of song that earns those rooms not through spectacle but through sincerity. sombr writes about the interior life of being young and uncertain and wanting connection with a specificity that makes you feel genuinely seen, and he does it again here better than he ever has before.
