ROSÉ Turns Heartbreak Into a Comeback in ‘new trick’ Official Music Video

ROSÉ is picking herself back up and stepping into a brighter chapter with “new trick,” a punchy new solo single that trades some of the melancholy of her earlier material for playful confidence and garage punk energy. The BLACKPINK singer released the track alongside its official music video on Sept. 18.

At its core, “new trick” is about finding a way forward after heartbreak. Rather than remaining stuck in the aftermath of a relationship, ROSÉ frames recovery as something active, choosing to get back up, go out and rediscover the parts of herself that exist beyond sadness. The Black Label described the energetic track as a song about overcoming hardship and moving ahead with your own “new trick.”

That change in perspective also marks a noticeable shift from the emotional vulnerability that shaped much of her 2024 debut album, rosie. Speaking with Vogue ahead of the release, ROSÉ described the song as “so not sad” and called it possibly the cutest thing she and frequent collaborator Amy Allen have made together. The singer also explained that she has been exploring what her next musical era should sound and feel like as she looks toward new music in 2027.

Sonically, “new trick” pushes ROSÉ toward a livelier pop rock direction, with gritty guitars and a fast moving chorus giving the song an immediate sense of momentum. Amy Allen and Andrew Wells co produced the track, reconnecting ROSÉ with collaborators who have already played roles in her solo catalog. Allen previously worked with her on “APT.,” while Wells collaborated on “Stay a Little Longer.”

The official video amplifies that carefree energy. Directed by Dave Meyers, the filmmaker behind visuals for artists including Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Ariana Grande, the clip was filmed entirely using the iPhone 18 Pro as part of Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign. Meyers previously worked with BLACKPINK on the group’s “JUMP” music video.

In the video, ROSÉ begins closer to the emotional state suggested by the song’s lovesick opening before gradually shaking it off. The visual follows her as she spends time with a group of skater friends, transforming the aftermath of heartbreak into something more spontaneous and liberating. Rather than dwelling on what went wrong, ROSÉ embraces movement, friendship and the possibility of starting over.

The video’s mobile production also gives “new trick” an interesting place within ROSÉ’s growing visual catalog. Despite being captured on a smartphone, the collaboration with Meyers embraces a cinematic scale while retaining a looser, youthful quality that fits the song’s theme of simply getting back out into the world.

“new trick” follows ROSÉ’s enormously successful rosie era, which included the Bruno Mars collaboration “APT.” The new song is being presented as a standalone release rather than a formal album announcement, but ROSÉ has already indicated that she is working toward another musical chapter planned for 2027.

With “new trick,” ROSÉ does not abandon heartbreak completely. Instead, she changes what happens after it. The song turns emotional recovery into something loud, playful and physical, while its official video captures a version of ROSÉ that appears ready to leave the sadness on the floor and kick open the door to whatever comes next.
