Pinwheel Valley, spearheaded by multi-instrumentalist Qais Khoury, embarked on its musical journey in the mid-2000s. By 2013, they released their debut album, though it was soon pulled back for further refinement. Even before that, Qais was performing covers and crafting original songs, refining the distinct sound that Pinwheel Valley would later be known for—a captivating fusion of Indie Soul, Alt Rock, and Folktronica.
The band’s music has been described as “defeatism-traversing atmospheric landscapes,” providing a unique auditory experience for fans of Indie Alt Rock and Neo-Classical sounds. Their paradoxical anthems, balancing profound strength with vulnerability, offer introspective themes wrapped in ethereal melodies—resonating deeply with those who appreciate emotionally rich and complex music.
Since their emergence, Pinwheel Valley has collected an impressive number of accolades. Their music videos for tracks like “Willow” and “Abduction” have earned international acclaim, winning awards at prestigious film festivals such as the New York Film Awards, Vegas Movie Awards, and the Swedish International Film Festival. Additionally, their track “Willow” was featured on Earmilk, further demonstrating their growing presence within the indie music scene.
2024 marked another milestone for Pinwheel Valley with the release of their latest work, “Reverie,” which garnered a feature in the influential music blog Notion. Their commitment to blending their music with compelling visuals has also secured them placements on boutique sync licensing rosters, further solidifying their status in both the music and film industries.
Pinwheel Valley’s newest release, “Your Superman,” epitomizes their signature sound, a convergence of introspective themes and an Indie Alt Rock framework. The song explores the concept of becoming one’s own hero, a narrative that feels both universal and deeply personal. The soulful, bright vocals in the chorus symbolize the light of heroism, while the verses shift between vulnerability and moments of profound inner strength.
The accompanying anime-inspired music video, conceived by Qais and executed by designers from South Africa, adds a rich visual narrative to the song. Drawing from the whimsical, otherworldly storytelling style of Studio Ghibli, the video follows a protagonist on a journey of self-discovery, guided by a mystical scarab that represents inner strength and intuition. “The idea for the video came from my wife, who is a huge Studio Ghibli fan,” Qais revealed. “I wanted to craft a visual story that would take viewers from moments of troubled self-reflection to supernatural introspection. The scarab became the symbol for that journey.”
