Olivia Rodrigo is entering a darker, more cinematic chapter.
On Thursday (May 22), the pop superstar unveiled “the cure,” the latest single from her upcoming third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, alongside a surreal new music video that blurs the line between healing and heartbreak.
Directed by Cat Solen and Jamie Gerin, the visual opens with Rodrigo dressed as a retro-style nurse inside a dreamlike hospital, attempting to mend broken hearts before eventually becoming a patient herself. The clip leans into eerie vintage imagery, emotional chaos and psychological symbolism — all while Rodrigo delivers one of her most emotionally raw performances yet.
Musically, “the cure” continues Rodrigo’s evolution beyond the sharp-edged angst of SOUR and the explosive vulnerability of GUTS. Produced by longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, the track mixes alt-rock textures with confessional lyricism as Rodrigo reflects on emotional dependency, self-doubt and the painful realization that love alone cannot fix everything.
The song’s title immediately sparked speculation among fans due to Rodrigo’s well-documented admiration for legendary British rock band The Cure. However, the singer clarified that the track is not directly connected to the group, calling the similarity a “happy coincidence.” Rodrigo has previously performed alongside frontman Robert Smith during her Glastonbury set in 2025, where the pair sang “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven.”
In recent interviews, Rodrigo described “the cure” as one of her favorite songs she has ever written — a bold statement considering the massive cultural impact of hits like “drivers license,” “good 4 u” and “vampire.”
The single follows “drop dead,” the theatrical lead release from Rodrigo’s forthcoming album, which arrives June 12. Together, both songs suggest a more mature and experimental sonic direction for the Grammy-winning artist, balancing grunge-inspired intensity with dreamy romantic despair.
