Josh Canova’s “Butter on a Cloud”: A Melodic Journey of Reflection and Perfection

Southern California singer-songwriter Josh Canova, known for his introspective lyrics and captivating melodies, is set to release his highly anticipated album, Butter on a Cloud, in late 2023. With influences ranging from pop and rock to folk, Canova has consistently impressed audiences and critics since his debut album in 2001.

Renowned for his intimate live performances that deeply resonate with listeners, Canova’s music has drawn comparisons to Ryan Adams, Elliott Smith, and Coldplay. His songs have been featured in popular TV shows like “One Tree Hill” and “Dawson’s Creek,” further solidifying his reputation as a talented singer-songwriter.

The lead single, also titled “Butter on a Cloud,” exemplifies Canova’s unique approach to music, blending introspective songwriting with lingering melodies. Describing his music as having its own personal identity crisis, Canova’s songs capture relatable emotions and touch the hearts of listeners.

In a recent interview, Canova expressed his creative process, emphasizing the urgency to capture his thoughts and emotions before they fade away. “Butter on a Cloud” reflects a heightened snapshot of his own human experience and offers an honest reflection on the cost of chasing an idealized version of ‘the perfect life” while missing the beauty of imperfection and the journey itself. The song is accompanied by a visually captivating music video that complements its introspective nature.

Collaborating with producer and arranger Deane Cote, Canova and Cote meticulously refined the album’s ten songs over several months. The recording sessions with Alan Sanderson, engineer, mixer and owner of Pacific Beat Studios in Pacific Beach, CA, involved a talented lineup of musicians, including James East on bass guitar, Brian “Nucci” Cantrell on drums, Bobby Furgo on piano, and vocalists Molly Jenson and Jessica Robertson on background vocals. Deane Cote provided his exceptional talents on electric and acoustic guitar while additional instrumentalists Andy Geib on trombone and Steve Dillar on trombone added the finishing touches, resulting in a cohesive and emotionally resonant musical voyage.

“Butter on a Cloud” showcases Canova’s growth as an artist and his ability to evoke profound emotions through his music.
